My Brother's Shade

"the true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit" - Nelson Henderson

I look back, I see what a life you made

All the songs we sang and the games we have played

Your beautiful family and plans you had laid

Now I ask one more favour, can I sit in your shade

We all cherish that tender and final embrace

And pray you are safe in a wonderful place

And though our tears still well and fall down our face

We'll feel better to sit in your shady space

It's not shade as we know it, but things you have done

The way you've touched family and friends - everyone

Your words and your actions have outshone the sun

Now together we'll finish what you have begun

We all have each other, we laugh and we cry

And we all will get stronger as time passes by

But when it all gets too much, please permit us to lie

In the shade you have left us and look to the sky

May that shade ease the burden of both friends and kin

Put the heartache behind us, let the future begin

Make us shake our heads then look up with a grin

And say thanks for the shade mate - I'll see you soon Skin.
